DFG project - IRTG 1522
Sub project of the IRTG 1522 Würzburg-Cape Town
Duration: 3 years
Antragszeitraum: 2008-2012
Doktorate: Dr. Nigel Makoah Aminake
Summary:
The tropical disease malaria causes an estimated 400 million cases every year and an annual death toll of more than two million people. In most endemic countries the treatment of malaria is undermined by the dramatic increase of drug resistance by the parasite. The drastic spread of HIV, furthermore, heightens susceptibility for severe malaria infection in HIV patients. It was the aim of the collaboration project with Prof. Dr. Kelly Chibale from the University of Cape Town to design and test inhibitors specific against the two big killers of Africa, Plasmodium falciparum and HIV.
